Golfers raise $116,000 for Krause Children's Center

Katy, Texas - More than 140 golfers teed off at the BP Annual Tomorrow's Child Golf Benefit at Pine Forest Golf Club in Houston on June 18 raising $116,000 for abused and neglected children cared for at the Krause Children's Center in Katy.

"We are proud to support Krause, not just financially, but as mentors and builders," said Orlando Alvarez, a golfer and BP senior vice president for the Western U.S. region "BP employees have sponsored three workdays to beautify and improve the Krause campus, and many of them serve as mentors to the residents. Just being there for these children is the most important thing anyone can do, and I encourage everyone to make an effort to reach out and help a child in need."

The luncheon also celebrated the spirit of giving with the first annual Ben Powell Award, presented to Bob Fox, a longtime supporter of Krause.

"Ben was a longtime volunteer who dedicated his time to the service of the children of Krause Children's Center, and truly demonstrated the quality of serving the needs of the children," said Diane Covert, regional advancement director for LSS "We recognize and celebrate the same qualities in Bob Fox."

For Fox, the award was both an honor and a fitting tribute to the memory of Powell's many years of service.

"We have all been blessed and we need to give back as we are able," he said. "It is up to all of us to do everything possible to help these folks achieve their ministry."

At the end of the day, the tournament raised more than $116,000, a 10 percent leap over last year's total.

"The giving spirit of Houston is never in doubt," said Renaté Doss, chief executive officer of Krause Children's Center. "It bowls us over to see just how much love and support is out there for children in need. On behalf of Krause residents, staff and volunteers, we thank each and every person who came to play and give of themselves."

This year's sponsors included Title Sponsor - BP North American Gas and Power Unit; Bronze Sponsor Mark and Cleo Griffith; Diamond Sponsors Greystone and Holiday World of Houston; Ruby Sponsors Blue Bell Creameries; Michael and Dr. Denise Boriack; Cold Stone Creamery; Don McGill Toyota in Katy; Hasta la Pasta; Spawglass Construction; three Architecture and USI Southwest.

Krause Children's Center serves boys and girls, ages 11 to 17, who suffer from severe emotional and behavioral problems, mostly as a result of past abuse and neglect.

Krause provides specialized care in a secure, structured environment where residents can receive therapy, attend school, enjoy recreational activities and are offered voluntary spiritual care.

Krause Children's Center is an affiliated ministry of Lutheran Social Services, the social service arm of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. LSS annually serves nearly 35,000 children and adults in Texas and Louisiana regardless of religious beliefs, ethnicity, gender or age.
