Listen
to Christina talk about her life today and you might never spy a hint of the troubled
past shes had to work so hard to overcome.
She
is happily married with two children and living in a wonderful home. She also
has a good relationship with her mother.
Christinas life was not always so tranquil. Years ago, the frustrations
of being a victim of sexual abuse, and the
lingering, unfounded guilt over her fathers suicide, bubbled over. She began
running away from home and using drugs to escape her problems, that now included
physical abuse from her mothers boyfriend. I was severely out of control,
Christina said. I was driving my mom absolutely wild. She decided it would
be safer for me if I was locked up. I didnt understand that and I thought
she just didnt want me anymore, so that made me even more self destructive. After
trying unsuccessfully to turn her life around at three other childrens treatment
facilities, Christina found herself at the Krause Childrens Center. Christina
earned her GED while at the Krause Center. Shortly thereafter she enrolled at
a community college to pursue a business management degree. I
think that the one thing that helped me the most was the Krause Center,
she said. Im a whole lot better for being there. Christina
said caring staff and their efforts to make life seem normal for residents
certainly made a difference. Birthday parties, outings and holiday celebrations
made her feel special. To have
all that stuff helps you have a semi-normal life with normal things when youre
not in a very normal place. It brightens up your life there. It lets you know
that people care about you. Today,
Christinas goals are to get a business law degree so she can help small
companies get their businesses off the ground. She also wants to make sure her
own family is healthy and happy. Things
have worked out very well for me, she says confidently. LEARN
